Creators

Du Yun

DU YUN, born and raised in Shanghai, China, and currently based in New York City, works at the intersection of opera, orchestral, theatre, cabaret, musical, oral tradition, public performances, electronics, visual arts, and noise.  Her body of work is championed by some of today’s finest performing groups and organizations around the world.

Known for her “relentless originality and unflinching social conscience” (The New Yorker), Du Yun’s second opera, Angel’s Bone (libretto by Royce Vavrek), won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in Music. She was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Classical Composition category for her work Air Glow. Her collaborative opera Sweet Land with Raven Chacon (for opera company The Industry) was the 2021 Best New Opera by the North America Critics Association. Four of her feature studio albums were named The New Yorker’s Notable Recordings of the Year, in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, respectively. 

A community champion, Du Yun was a founding member of the International Contemporary Ensemble; served as the Artistic Director of MATA Festival (2014-2018); conceived the Pan Asia Sounding Festival (National Sawdust); and founded FutureTradition, a global initiative that illuminates the provenance lineages of folk art and uses these structures to build cross-regional collaborations from the ground up. Du Yun was named one of 38 Great Immigrants by the Carnegie Foundation (2018), “Artist of the Year” by the Beijing Music Festival (2019). In 2022, she was granted a Creative Capital Award for an AR inter-generational Kun-opera project. Asia Society Hong Kong has honored her for her continued contribution in the performing arts field. Other notable awards include Guggenheim, American Academy Berlin Prize, Fromm Foundation, Foundation for Contemporary Arts.

As an avid performer and bandleader (Ok Miss), her onstage persona has been described by the New York Times as “an indie pop diva with an avant-garde edge.” 

Du Yun is Professor of Composition at the Peabody Institute, and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Her concert music is published worldwide by G.Schirmer.

Royce Vavrek

Royce Vavrek is a Canada-born, Brooklyn-based librettist and lyricist who has been called “the indie Hofmannsthal” (The New Yorker) a “Metastasio of the downtown opera scene” (The Washington Post), “an exemplary creator of operatic prose” (The New York Times), and “one of the most celebrated and sought after librettists in the world” (CBC Radio). His opera “Angel’s Bone” with composer Du Yun was awarded the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Music.

His work has been presented at or performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Los Angeles Opera, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Carnegie Hall, New York City Opera, The Kitchen, Alarm Will Sound, International Contemporary Ensemble, Opera America, American Lyric Theater, Beth Morrison Projects, Brooklyn Youth Chorus and Peak Performances @ Montclair, among others. His recent commissions include operas for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Fort Worth Opera, Opera Philadelphia, Houston Grand Opera and the Prototype Festival, along with a musical for Signature Theater. Vavrek's filmmaking credits include From Sky and Soil, which was created as part of the Corus Young Filmmakers Initiative for broadcast on the W Network, through a prize administered by the Canadian Film and Television Production Association.

Royce is co-Artistic Director of The Coterie, an opera-theatre company founded with Tony-nominee Lauren Worsham. He holds a BFA in Filmmaking and Creative Writing from Concordia University’s Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema in Montreal and an MFA from the Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program at New York University. He is an alum of American Lyric Theater’s Composer Librettist Development Program.

Co-Producer, Co-Director

Alaina is a daring director, creator and producer based in Toronto. She is the Founder and Executive Artistic Director of award nominated opera company Loose Tea Music Theatre where they creates genre defying productions that center on critical social issues, raising underrepresented voices and cross-cultural relationships.

Alan Corbishley (he/him)
Co-Producer, Co-Director

Alan is known as a baritone having sung throughout North America and Europe, and is now more focused on producing and stage direction. Alan is the founding Artistic Director of Sound the Alarm: Music/Theatre and as a stage director, his productions have been named in Vancouver’s Annual Best Music Events.  His creations are touring across Canada and is passionate about exploring the theatre of music through all its genres, having worked within opera, musical theatre, pop, rock, audio drama, cabaret, and new sound design.  www.soundthealarm.ca www.alancorbishley.com 

Joshua Slater (he/him)
Music Director

Joshua Anand Slater is an Indian-American conductor and composer, known equally for his work in new music and for “rich, full-throated” interpretations of established repertoire.  

A long-term advocate for other visible minority artists, and a believer in the value of learning and participation in classical music and the choral tradition for visible minority communities, Joshua regularly leads Loose Tea Music Theatre’s BIPOC Composer-Librettist Development Program.  Joshua is the Founding Artistic Director of fujit productions (founded 2009), a concert organization committed to promoting underrepresented voices.


David Schotzko (he/him)
Co-Producer

As a soloist, chamber musician, and curator, percussionist David Schotzko is a passionate advocate for contemporary composers, having premiered over 300 works with percussion by composers from around the globe. He was a founding member of the renowned International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) in New York and Chicago and was ICE’s Program Director from 2002 to 2008.


Terriea Harris (she/her)
Counselor/Consultant on Human Trafficking

Turiya is an Indigenous women, a mother, a registered therapeutic counsellor, Tantric Shamanic Priestess, Kundalini dancer, and best selling author of "unapologetcially YOU" 

Her work is informed by her lived experience (she was sex traffikked as a youth from the ages of 13-16 in Toronto), somatic therapy and marrying ancient wisdoms and practices of the Feminine principle with the best of modern science or Masculine principle.

Her role with the National Inquiry into Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls was as a witness (statement gatherer) that  delivered a final report to the governemnet of Canada, identifying the root causes as a consequence of Colonial, Patriarchal, Capitalistic systemic violence and calls to action.

She values re-imagining a world rooted in our connection to the land and Shared Power.

Corey Tazmania (she/her)
Intimacy Director

Corey Tazmania is grateful to collaborate on such a powerful story. Recent work include: The Hooves Belonged to the Deer- In Arms Theatre Collective, Edmonton Fringe; Heartless- Aki Studio; Intimate Apparel - Thousand Islands Playhouse;The Hooves Belonged to the Deer - The Tarragon; Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo- Crow's Theatre. Corey also serves as an Intimacy Consultant for Hart House Theatre and as an Intimacy Professional for academic theatre throughout the GTA.

Brenda Lochhead (she/her)
VancouverHuman Trafficking Consultant/ Committee Manager/Co-Dramaturge

Brenda is a social worker with Family Services of Greater Vancouver and has more than 25 years of experience in the anti-violence sector, where she supports victims in the Vancouver Police Department Counter Exploitation Unit. She provides services to victims of sexual exploitation and human trafficking. She was instrumental in the development and implementation of a coordination framework for supporting trafficked and exploited individuals, which has been recognized by other policing agencies.

Alyssa Nicole Samson (she/her)
Mezzo, Mrs. XE

Alyssa Nicole Samson is a Filipino-Canadian mezzo-soprano, based in Vancouver, with a passion for contemporary and new music.  

Along with performing internationally throughout Europe. her '23/'24 season, is filled with new music. She reprises her role as Mrs. XE in Angel’s Bone in Toronto and is debuting two new roles: Shiping in Opera West’s Thunderstorm and Medusa/Melpomene in Good Mess Theatre’s Monster’s Made. Past highlights include Female Friend in Tapestry Opera’s Dragon’s Tale, La Baronessa di Champigny in Il Cappello di Paglia di Firenze and Jezibaba in Rusalka with UBC Opera. 

Alexander Dobson (he/him)
Baritone, Mr. XE

Recognized for his "ringing, present sound" and "rich, flexible, baritone", British-Canadian Alexander Dobson has been praised for his musicality and dramatic awareness on both opera and concert stages. Roles include the title roles in Wozzeck and Don Giovanni, Guglielmo (Così Fan Tutte), Belcoré (L’elisir d’amore), The Count (The Marriage of Figaro), and Marcello (La Bohème),

Asitha Tennekoon (he/him)
Tenor, Boy Angel

Praised by The Globe and Mail for ‘...his silky, emotional presence on stage – both vocally and dramatically...’ Sri Lankan tenor Asitha Tennekoon has established himself as one of Canada’s most versatile singing artists. He is sought after for performances spanning from Baroque to new, and experimental music. 

Winona Miles (she/her)
Soprano, Girl Angel

Winona is a multi-disciplinary performer from the Secwépemc Nation. She grew up working in the community and professional theatre scenes in Greater Vancouver and studying voice independently, training up to Grade 8 with Royal Conservatory of Music, as well as performing with various choral groups nationwide. 

Ryan McDonald (they/him)
Victim 'A' (Male Soprano), Girl Angel (voicing)

An award winner from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Ryan McDonald has appeared as a soloist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, London Handel Orchestra, Theatre of Early Music, Hamilton Symphony Orchestra, Amadeus Choir and Nota Bene Players. Appearances on stage include Athamas in Handel's Semele, L'enfant in Ravels L'enfant et les sortilèges & Cupid in John Blows Venus and Adonis. 

Upcoming performances include Britten's Turn of The Screw with Opera5 and Allegri's Miserere with Theatre of Early Music. 

Ryan is the Co-Founder/ Artistic Director of OperaQ, a company focused specifically on presenting queer theater, by queer artists for queer audiences. OperaQ's first commissioned work, Medusa's Children, was a finalist for the 2023 Awards for Digital Excellence in Opera presented by Opera America. 

Ryan is currently pursuing a DMA in Historical Performance at the University of Toronto.

Daniela Agostino (she/her)  Victim 'B', Ensemble(Soprano)

Italian- Canadian Daniela Agostino holds a Masters degree in Performance and Literature from Western University.  

Recent professional highlights include: Frasquita in Carmen (Southern Ontario Lyric Opera), Gianetta in L’elisir d’amore (Highlands Opera Studio), Gretel in Good Mess Opera Theatre’s Hank and Gremlin workshop, Festa in Michael Rose’s new Canadian musical A Northern Light’s Dream, Gertrude Stein in The Mother of us All (Voicebox: Opera in Concert), Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro (Southern Ontario Lyric Opera), Valencienne in The Merry Widow (BROTT Opera, Toronto Operetta Theatre), Aunt Angelique in Kamouraska (Voicebox: Opera in Concert), Zerlina in Don Giovanni (Opera York), and Arsena in Die Zigeunerbaron (Toronto Operetta Theatre). 

Most recently, Daniela was seen as a finalist in the National Capital Opera Competition. 

Erica Iris (she/her)
Ensemble (Mezzo), Nun

Praised for her stage presence of warmth and character, DORA Award wining mezzo-soprano ERICA IRIS HUANG captivates in performances of opera, concert oratorio, and contemporary repertoire. Winner of the 2011 Eckhardt-Gramatté Music Competition, she was awarded a recital tour across Canada showcasing contemporary Canadian works. She has performed numerous works with Tapestry Opera such as Naomi’s Road (2013), Rocking Horse Winner (2016), Oksana G. (2017), The Overcoat (2018) and fulfilled many school tours in Ontario with The Aldeburgh Connection, Canadian Opera Company Ensemble, and Vancouver Opera In Schools. Erica made her stage debuts with the Canadian Opera Company as the Second Maid in Elektra (2019), Mrs. Petrovich in The Overcoat with Vancouver Opera (2018), and Bloody Mary in Calgary Opera’s South Pacific (2017). Erica’s in her fifteenth consecutive season with the Canadian Opera Company Chorus, and sings for dogs she joyfully grooms in her Toronto loft with her poodle assistants, Biko & Kiba.

Anika Venkatesh (they/them) Ensemble (Mezzo), TV Host, Girl Angel (voicing)

Hailing from Coast Salish Territories, Anika Venkatesh is a genre-defying vocalist currently based in Tkarón:to, Ontario, and a recent graduate of the University of Toronto (BMus.). Recent stage credits include the world premiere of Quote Unquote Collective’s production, Universal Child Care (Canadian Stage), alto soloist in Craig Hella Johnson’s Considering Matthew Shepard (Concreamus Chamber Choir), “The House” in Gareth Williams’ Rocking Horse Winner, the world premiere of Chan Ka Nin’s Dragon’s Tale (Tapestry Opera & Soundstreams Choir 21), alto soloist in R. Nathaniel Dett’s The Ordering of Moses (The Nathaniel Dett Chorale & The Rochester Oratorio Society), and Drusilla in Verdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea (NUOVA Vocal Arts). 

Alongside their classical, operatic, and choral skillsets and special interest in contemporary music, Anika is also a jazz and R&B musician and a theatre performer.

Annie Ramos (she/her)
Ensemble (Soprano)

Annie Ramos has  gained notoriety in the musical theatre and operetta with such roles as Mabel in Gilbert and Sullivan‘s Pirates of Penzance, Elsie in Yeoman of  the Guard, as well as Maria in West Side Story and Cosette in Les Miserables. 


Professional engagements have included: Sound of Music and Fiddler on the Roof, with Drayton Entertainment. Sound of Music, Vancouver Arts Club, Pearl Fishers, with Vancouver Opera, soprano soloist in Mozart’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Brahm's Requiem with Guelph chamber choir and Musica Viva orchestra; and Rossini’s Stabat Mater  and Mahler Symphony #4  with Acarborough Philharmonic Orchestra.,  Princess Tuptim in The Stratford Festival’s  The King and I; Goddess Diana in Shakespeare’s Pericles; Sydney in The National Arts Centre's Sanctuary Song; and most recently Countess in The Marriage of Figaro

She was soprano soloist in the world premiere of Hosea, at Koerner Hall. Annie won a DORA for best ensemble withiin RUR Torrent of light with Tapestry Opera.

Fabian Arciniegas (he/him) Ensemble (Tenor) 

Fabian Arciniegas is a versatile Colombian-Canadian singer-actor who brings a wide range of repertoire to life..

Inspired by his love for chamber singing, Fabian toured Canada and internationally as part of Crossing Borders. 

He has premiered new compositions by composers such as Saman Shahi, Chia Yin Wu, Mario Gómez Vignes and has performed with prestigious organizations including the Canadian Opera Company, Toronto Operetta Theatre, Opera in Concert, and Loose Tea Music Theatre.

He is the creator and performer of The Colores, a show that invites audiences to engage with classical and contemporary music through pop music and storytelling.

Bradley Christensen (he/him)  Ensemble (Bass)

Award winning Baritone, voice teacher, and guest clinician, Dr. Bradley Christensen enjoys a busy multi-faceted career on both concert and operatic stages.  Recent highlights include appearances with: Toronto Operetta Theatre, Canadian Opera Company, Cultureland Opera Collective, Bach Elgar Choir, Young Women’s Choral Projects of San Francisco, Auckland Choral Society, as well a performance in Auckland, New Zealand of Brahms’ song cycle, Die schöne Magelone, conceptualized with director, Aria Umezawa. 

Bradley is the holder of four degrees: a BMus (Hons) in Vocal Performance, BA in Italian, a MMus and DMA in Voice Performance/ Pedagogy. 

Keith Lam (he/him)
Ensemble (Bass)

Hong Kong born, Toronto-based, Keith Lam recently performed with Jeremy Dutcher on his tour for his Juno nominated album Motewolonuwok.  

Last summer, he appeared in the production of Dragon's Tale as part of the Luminato Festival and was seen the film adaption of the a cappella opera Sweat, which premiered at the 2023 Kingston Canadian Film Festival.

He is a member of the Canadian Opera Company Chorus and has worked with Soundstreams, Tapestry Opera, Tafelmusik, Opera Five, Bicycle Opera Project, Toronto Operetta Theatre, and Jeunesse Musicales.

He was the audience prizewinner at the Classical Music Consort Handel Competition, finalist at the 2013 Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra Competition.  

Ryan Downey (he/him)
Ensemble (Tenor)

A proud Newfoundlander, Ryan Downey was recently on the opera stage with the Canadian Opera Company, Vancouver Opera, Toronto Operetta Theatre and Opera in Concert. 

Recent solo credits include the title role in Candide, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Rodolfo in La boheme, Ralph Rackstraw in HMS Pinafore, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, Goro (Pinkerton cover) in Madama Butterfly, the Gingerbread Witch in Hansel and Gretel and Basilio and Curzio Le nozze di Figaro. 

This past season at the COC, Ryan covered the roles of Remendado in Carmen and Spoletta in Tosca.

 Selected concert engagements include Handel’s Messiah with the Edmonton and Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra’s, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Mozart’s Requiem with the Windsor Symphony, Beethoven’s Mass in C with the Guelph Symphony.

Claire Harris (she/her) Pianist/Repiteteur

Claire is in demand as a versatile pianist, coach and collaborator in Toronto. She is Associate Director with Opera by Request, Toronto, and acts as Music Director for productions during their season. 

She is also the pianist for Canadian Children's Opera Company Youth Chorus as well as being one of the regular performers for Crossing Borders, a company performing works by living composers in Canada.  

Claire is the co-producer and pianist for Opera Revue and works regularly withAmarras, No Strings Theatre, Windsor Symphony, Mississauga Symphony as well as continuing as Vocal Coach at the University of Toronto. As well as her work in opera and new music, Claire is the

Holly Meyer-Dymny is an award-winning theatre designer, theatre educator, painter, arts advocate, and a board member of the Associated Designers of Canada.

Joline Rath (she/her)
Costume Designer

Joline Rath is an up and coming costume designer based in Victoria, BC. A seamstress by trade, she has a rich background of technical experience ranging from sustainable garment manufacturing to gymnastic apparel to furniture upholstery. Joline is a graduate of The National Theatre School of Canada’s Set & Costume Design Program where she received specialized training in costume breakdown and interned under a master cutter. Always interested in combining the technical with the creative, Joline’s understanding of how things are made inspires and refines her artistic work.

Associate Projection Designer

Cameron Fraser is a multidisciplinary artist with an extensive background in performing and visual arts, spanning over two decades. Through his company, Escapist Entertainment, he has designed projections, sets, props, or assisted designers for such companies as The Grand Theatre, Punctuate! Theatre, Vancouver Opera, Sound The Alarm Music Theatre, Compagni V'ni Dansi, Alberta Theatre Projects, Touchstone Theatre, Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre, The Confederation Centre for the Arts, Kentucky Opera, Boca Del Lupo, the Vancouver Art Gallery, Theatre Under the Stars, The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Theatre Calgary/Western Canada Theatre, Vertigo Theatre/The Arts Club, Horseshoes & Handgrenades, Talk is Free Theatre, The Underground Circus, TEDXVictoria, as well as for a variety of corporate clients, including Volvo, Samsung, Florida International Bankers Association (FIBA), Cruise Line Industry Association, The Investment Planning Counsel, Colours & Shapes, and BlendFest. Lin-Mei is a multidiscipline theatre practitioner,  having taken various roles from technician, designer, props builder, before settling into stage management.  She is the winner of MyTheatre Award for Outstanding Stage Management (2015).

Alexandra Christofides (she/her)
Costume Coordinator

Alexandra has enjoyed the creativity of designing and making costumes and fashion design for over 20 years.

She studied Theatre and Costumes at York University years ago and also has a strong Musical Background.

Alexandra has experience in both Costume Design and Making Costumes, for High School Musicals and Theatre to Ballet Productions, Opera Companies, Theatres and also has experience with Film and Commercials.

Alexandra was the proud owner of Studio 7 on Avenue Road in Toronto, where she cherishes eight years of designing and creating fashion and costumes, as well as teaching design and sewing classes to children, teens, adults and seniors and design students. 

Alexandra had her fashion lines featured in Yorkville; Toronto, New York, Philadelphia, Atlantic City, Virginia and Spain among other countries abroad.  She is often called upon for custom designs and specialty items.

She has participated in Many Fashion Shows and Trunk Shows and has recently began working with Costumes for Opera Productions and enjoys the symbolic creativity, and helping to bring characters to life with costumes.

York, Die Fledermaus; Opera York,;Rigoletto; Opera York, and as Costume Designer forAlexandra has enjoyed the creativity of designing and making costumes and fashion design for over 20 years.

She studied Theatre and Costumes at York University years ago and also has a strong Musical Background.

Alexandra has experience in both Costume Design and Making Costumes, for High School Musicals and Theatre to Ballet Productions, Opera Companies, Theatres and also has experience with Film and Commercials.

Alexandra was the proud owner of Studio 7 on Avenue Road in Toronto, where she cherishes eight years of designing and creating fashion and costumes, as well as teaching design and sewing classes to children, teens, adults and seniors and design students.

Atlantic City, Virginia and Spain among other countries abroad.  She is often called upon for custom designs and specialty items.

Turiya Wild Rose (she/her)

Turiya is an Indigenous womyn, a mother, a registered therapeutic counsellor, Tantric Shamanic Priestess trained in Kundalini dance and a best selling author of a chapter called "unapologetcially YOU" inspiring folks to embody emotional intelligence. For the last 12 years she has supported  folks navigating the intersections of trauma, violence and abuse, sex work and sexuality to embody their most authentic and empowered self and live their sacred purpose.

Her role with the National Inquiry into Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls was as a witness (statement gatherer) to the stories of other survivors and family members, that  delivered a final report to the governemnet of Canada, identifying the root causes as a consequence of Colonial, Patriarchal, Capitalistic systemic violence and calls to action.

Her work is informed by her lived experience (she was sex traffikked as a youth from the ages of 13-16 in street level and indoor sexual exploitation), somatic therapy and marrying ancient wisdoms and practices of the Feminine principle with the best of modern science or Masculine principle.

She loves to dance and shares that dance was her sanctuary through her complex trauma childhood experiences. She values authenticity, self-expression, personal sovereignty AND interdependence. Re-imagining a world rooted in our connection to the land and Shared Power.

Ala'a Founouni (he/him)

Ala'a Founouni created and developed a men's accountability program titled "Redefining Manhood", which aims to prevent violence against women and encourages bystander intervention. The provincially-funded workshops were presented to high school students across British Columbia. 

Ala'a also coordinated and facilitated online safety workshops on behalf of Children of the Street Society, an organization dedicated to preventing the sexual exploitation of children and youth. He is currently employed as a Youth & Family Counsellor and continues to be very passionate about raising awareness around the issue of human trafficking.

Kim Fleming (she/her)

Kim Fleming (she/her) MSW RSW is of Scottish ancestry & born on Mi’kma’ki homelands colonially known as Nova Scotia. Kim has a private clinical practice that centres the healing of historical, intergenerational, structural, developmental and relational trauma. Kim provides clinical consultation to health practitioners and organizations. 

As a settler with colonizer roots, Kim is also committed to personally reckoning with & healing colonial legacy & its ongoing impacts. As a guest on this stolen, living Land, Kim is deeply grateful to the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skmwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) ancestors & peoples who have shared & cared for these beautiful homelands since time immemorial.

Charlee Beckett (they/them)

Charlee Beckett (aka Keigh) is a local independent indoor sex worker. She’s been in the business for six years and is a staunch advocate for decriminalization and destigmatization, and raising awareness about the difference between sex work and trafficking. In her spare time, she volunteers with PACE society; she spoke on the morning show on Global News about sex work on their behalf and has helped lead workshops at local organizations about the legalities and stigma surrounding sex work. 

VICE magazine included her experience being excluded from online dating apps as a result of her profession.  Also a musician, Charlee is honoured and excited to be working with this talented and varied team to ensure the line between consensual and coerced work remains clear in this project.

Hayden Averill (he/him)

Hayden Averill is the current Program Coordinator of Redefining Manhood: Acting Out Against Toxic Masculinity and Exploitation. This program consists of a 60 minute, interactive, workshop with secondary school students (aged 13-18). Hayden discusses the role that men, and by extension masculinity, play in sexual violence. He challenges young men to challenge traditional concepts of masculinity and educated about how toxic aspects of masculinity contribute to the issue of sexual assault in Canadian high schools. Hayden created the curriculum, books workshops, coordinates travel, as well as runs the social media of the Redefining Manhood program.
